  • The changing dynamic between the two old allies reflects the impact of 14 long years of war that has left America weary of foreign intervention.
  • Obama administration officials said the President will tout newly bolstered intelligence-sharing between the United States and France.
Washington (CNN)It might be America's oldest alliance, but it has rarely looked more vibrant.French President François Hollande and U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday vowed to intensify their nations' military attacks on ISIS in Syria and Iraq at a White House meeting lent urgency and deep symbolic significance by the terrorist attacks on Paris 10 days ago that opened a new phase of the war on terror.Even before the attacks, France, as the only European nation joining the United States in striking ISIS in Syria, and after several anti-terror operations in Africa in which the two nations cooperated, had emerged as the closest U.S. transatlantic military ally. And the solidarity on show between Obama and Hollande during an hour-long press conference in the East Room of the White House made clear that the U.S.-France diplomatic relationship is tighter than ever -- even if Obama doesn't plan to greatly change his strategy or work with Russia to battle the terror group, as France has called for, unless Russia confines its attacks to ISIS.Despite some divergence in the two leaders' ideas for how best to battle ISIS, Tuesday's press conference seemed to be a deliberate show of unity and exchange of rhetorical support between the presidents at a time of international disruption and global terror.
Obama spoke in unusually personal and emotive terms directly to the French people about his own memories of spending time in France as he argued that the ISIS shootings and bombings on cafes, a soccer stadium and a concert hall in Paris were by extension an attack on the world itself."We love France for your spirit and your culture and your joie de vivre. Since the attacks, Americans have recalled their own visits to Paris, visiting the Eiffel Tower or walking along the Seine. We know these places. They're part of our memories, woven into the fabric of our lives and our culture," Obama said. The President said that upstairs in the White House residence, he had a photo of first lady Michelle Obama and himself kissing in the French capital's Luxembourg Gardens.

Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy’s Wedding was Reportedly a Smoky Affair

Olivier and Mary-Kate, the said-to-be-married couple. Photo: Getty 29-year-old Mary-Kate Olsen is a married woman, according to Page Six. The actress turned award-winning fashion designer is said to have wed 46-year-old Olivier Sarkozy, half brother of the former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The pair, who have been dating for three years, is said to have tied the knot Friday evening in East Midtown Manhattan. While we don’t yet have photos of the ceremony, we’re guessing it was a pretty stylish affair, though we imagine the guests are running their outfits to the dry cleaners this weekend, as it is said that the affair included “bowls and bowls filled with cigarettes,” and that folks were getting their smoke on all night. We hope Mary-Kate also provided her guests with her Elizabeth and James brand perfumes and dry shampoos – cigarette smoke is a smell that definitely lingers. In the meantime, we’ll be here waiting for a glimpse of MK’s dress which we are sure was nothing short of fabulous.

The shooting at Planned Parenthood put GOP 2016 hopefuls in a ‘politically uncomfortable’ position

The motive for a shooting that took place outside a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday still isn’t clear, but all three of the top Democratic presidential candidates quickly rushed to express their support for the organization. Meanwhile, the leading Republicans, all of whom have spoken out against Planned Parenthood, have largely remained silent about the shooting.Operatives from both parties suggested to Yahoo News that the incident puts the GOP field in a tough spot because of its opposition to Planned Parenthood. The organization is thecountry’s largest provider of abortions.Three people were killed in the shooting. One of the victims was a police officer who responded to a call for help. The suspect has been identified as Robert Lewis Dear, who was reportedly captured on the scene in Colorado Springs aftersurrendering to law enforcement. According to the Associated Press, Dear had spent part of his time living in a North Carolina shack, and his neighbors described him as an incoherent loner with no known political or religious leanings. However, John Suthers, the Republican mayor of Colorado Springs, suggested people could draw conclusions about a motive for the attack by drawing “inferences from where it took place.”President Obama issued a statement on the shooting Saturday that did not address the question of opposition to abortion as a potential motive. Instead, the president suggested that the incident is further proof of the need for stronger gun control.“We don’t yet know what this particular gunman’s so-called motive was for shooting 12 people, or for terrorizing an entire community, when he opened fire with an assault weapon and took hostages at a Planned Parenthood center in Colorado. What we do know is that he killed a cop in the line of duty, along with two of the citizens that police officer was trying to protect,” Obama said, adding, “This is not normal. We can’t let it become normal.”

The Agony of Being Salman

 THA AGONY OF BEING SALMAN

The Agony of Being Salman

Salman Khan waves from the balcony on arrival at his house in Galaxy Apartment after getting bail from his ongoing trial of hit and run case

Salman Khan

Read more about Salman Khan
A couple of years ago, Masala! had an opportunity to meet Salman Khan at an event. We were given strict instructions on what subjects to touch upon and (more importantly) what not to ask. In the few minutes we had with him, we realised why most scribes described him as an interviewer’s nightmare – he speaks only a few words, is sarcastic in his replies and can make you uncomfortable with his even stare. It was definitely not one of our best interactions.
But earlier this year, we met him again at the launch of a jewellery brand he had been signed up for and the story was entirely different! Salman was charming, funny, eager to chat and came up with smart, witty repartees to even the most banal questions. Bhai was in a good mood and it showed.
This Jekyll and Hyde personality pretty much sums up the core of Salman’s life. Perhaps there are no shades of grey in this superstar’s life. It’s either black or white; what you see is what you get with him. And this is what makes him infuriating and endearing in equal measure.
Every entertainment journalist worth his or his salt has a ‘Salman story’ to narrate. But while these stories may differ, there is one thing that has been constant in his turbulent life – the love of his fans and his affection for them. And that was the dilemma of the reaction to the sentence that was pronounced in the 2002 hit and run case last week – should we celebrate that justice was finally delivered to the victims of the accident regardless of the clout and popularity of the perpetuator or should the accused (Salman) be given a second chance in life, given his humanitarian work and attempts to redeem himself over the years?
Wish the answers were easy! Simply because, this has been the most complex case – legally, ethically and logically. We try to make sense of the past 13 year and the lead up to the biggest news headline of the year so far – Salman Khan found guilty!
THE CASE:  SOME FACTS, SOME RUMOURS & SOME MANIPULATIONS
Facts:
The details of the infamous hit and run have been played out too often to bear repetition here. What the world knows is this: Salman, in a state of inebriation, drove over people sleeping on the footpath of a bakery called the American Bakery on September 28, 2002, killing one person and injuring four others. The initial reports all held him responsible but what followed was a long haul in the courts. In tune with the tardy processes of the Indian judicial system, there were innumerable delays, witnesses turning hostile, judges changed, statements being altered, important papers went missing and the courts charging him under stricter provisions than those that were initially applied. One of the biggest twists in the case happened when a key witness and the police bodyguard the actor had been provided with, Ravindra Patil, who had filed the initial FIR (First Information Report) died of TB in a miserable state. His condition, exposed by a Mumbai tabloid, brought to light the fact that several key aspects of the case were not exactly what was being presented to the media. Were people being manipulated? What exactly happened that night? The questions were endless and the answers, zilch. As months passed and there were one delay after another, many felt this case would never reach its logical end and even if it did, Salman would get away, like most of the rich and powerful do. However, our sources say, the developments of the last couple of months, with new evidences presented and arguments being made, had changed the scene considerably. In fact, on judgement day, the prevailing mood in Bandra, the Mumbai suburb Salman resides in on judgement day, was that he would be found guilty. And that’s exactly what has happened.
Rumours:
There have been several whispers and rumours doing the rounds over the years about what exactly transpired that fateful night. A lady who is closely associated with the American Bakery, told our source that workers saw the car come crashing into them. And the whispers are that Salman was at the wheel. Such was the impact that the car came smashing inside though there was quite a distance between the road and the entrance of the bakery. The glass door of the bakery was shattered, the people who slept on the footpath were grievously injured but Salman ran off, probably in panic.  Interestingly a lot of witnesses weren’t even called to depose though they had seen it all. Another source told us, “Salman and his family is much loved in this area, people here genuinely don’t want to see him harmed. There were workers from neighbouring stores too who saw the entire incident but the allegation is that a lot of them were paid off. That may or may not be true but people in Bandra genuinely don’t want to speak against him. They are very fond of Salman and his family, they feel while he has made a huge mistake, he is also a good human being who has helped the needy.”
Another version has been doing the rounds about what actually led to the accident. A controversial blog written by a journalist a couple of years ago detailed the lead up to the incident. It was alleged that after his break-up with a top actress, Salman went a bit off the handle. It was also the time when he had been receiving threats from the underworld and perhaps a combination of factors led him to lose control over himself. It’s now been established that Salman was driving the car at breakneck speed despite being warned by his aforementioned bodyguard (who was in the vehicle with him) against it.
Manipulations:
What perhaps went against Salman in the verdict were his (rather, his lawyers’) alleged manipulations. The case of the missing bodyguard Ravindra Patil was a huge blow. But there were other accusations too. It was alleged that after the controversial blog appeared, the blogger received threats from Salman’s team and he was forced to pull his blog down. Only a few stray websites reported this.
Then the developments of the last few weeks perhaps went against him. Prime among this was the appearance of his mysterious driver who claimed it was he and not Salman who was driving the car. Similarly, Salman claimed he had not been drunk in the hotel (where he was seen prior the accident); rather, he had been only drinking water. Unfortunately for him, neither the court nor his fans bought this defence.
Ultimately, none of the ruse employed by his lawyers worked in his favour. The court found him guilty on all charges.

WHY THE WORLD IS DIVIDED
The facts are clear, the law has made its position clear but the verdict is not just a simple one of a guilty person being punished for his crime. Salman Khan is not an ordinary star. In fact, though Sanjay Dutt was equally popular and his die-hard fans supported him throughout his trial and incarceration, the support that Salman has seen is unprecedented. But there are a few minority voices who are questioning this blind faith in the star. The law has to prevail is the argument.  But the sharp reactions are primarily because Salman is such a polarising figure. In the Salman world – there are two guys, polar opposites of each other.
THE GOOD GUY
His charity has been written innumerable times. But what’s great about Salman is that he is probably one of the few stars who does good deeds when the cameras aren’t around. Noted journalist Harneet Singh writes in her blog that once when she called him to get his opinion on protest against Shah Rukh Khan’s film My Name is Khan, he supported SRK strongly. This was the time when the two weren’t even on talking terms. Similarly, over the years, deliberately or otherwise, he has made an attempt to get rid of his bad boy image and let the world know about it. A man who claimed to have done his manicures for a while, was once quoted in an article as saying, “There is hardly another man in the industry who helps others as much as him. He connects with people because of his intrinsic goodness.”  Just a few weeks ago, he supported a Kashmiri family when he got to know of their travails while he was on a shoot in Kashmir. Such stories are legendary.
His family man image is also very story. Singh writes that over the years, Salman had opened up to her and spoken about a lot of things but the only thing he guards fiercely is his family. A few months ago he allegedly took on the comedy group All India Bakchod (AIB) because they made some derogatory remarks against his sister Arpita.
His family, not surprisingly, has rallied around him and supported him through every controversy of his (and there have been plenty). His sisters Alvira and Arpita were present at every court hearing. Even on judgement day brothers Salman and Arbaaz were extremely protective about him. It was heard that his mother Salma took ill after hearing her son had been found guilty. His dad Salim who has endured much heartburn over the years has been a strong pillar of support.
THE BAD GUY
A great family guy, a messiah to his fans, a genuine do-gooder… there are several adjectives for Salman. But there are an equal number of negative stories about him as well. He has especially shared a love-hate relationship with the media with several scribes detailing how impolite he has been even without any provocation. A writer once said, “I had gone to interview him and I was pregnant at the time. He was smoking. I requested him to stop smoking as it was dangerous for my health. But he continued puffing away.”
Even the blogger who had detailed the case and was allegedly threatened had felt very vulnerable. So much so that he not only did he take down his blog but he actually apologised for it.  Finally there are stories galore of his eccentricities and bizarre behaviour some of which are downright amusing. But that’s also part of the package called Salman – love him or hate him, that’s the way he is.  His detractors point out that howsoever he may have redeemed himself, fact remains that he did manipulate the law, took advantage of the loopholes and tried tricks to avoid punishment.

Eiffel Tower goes dark as France mourns 129 dead

PARISThe Eiffel Tower stood dark in a symbol of mourning Saturday night as France struggled to absorb the deadliest violence on its soil since World War II: coordinated gun-and-suicide bombing attacks across Paris that left at least 129 people dead and 352 injured.
President Francois Hollande vowed that France would wage “merciless” war on the Islamic State group, which claimed responsibility for the mayhem, as investigators raced to track down their accomplices and uncovered possible links to networks in Belgium and Syria.
Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said three groups of attackers, including seven suicide bombers, carried out the “act of barbarism” that shattered a Parisian Friday night.
He said the attackers in the Bataclan concert hall, where 89 people died, mentioned Syria and Iraq during their rampage. Of the hundreds wounded in the six attacks, 99 were in critical condition.
Seven attackers launched gun attacks at Paris cafes, detonated suicide bombs near France’s national stadium and killed hostages inside the concert venue during a show by an American rock band — an attack on the heart of the pulsing City of Light.
Ahsan Naeem, a 39-year-old filmmaker, said he’s been to many of the places that were attacked Friday.
“I’ve seen dozens of gigs at the Bataclan. Eaten at the Petit Cambodge. Sat outside Le Carillon on so many nights,” said Naeem, who has lived in Paris for seven years. “All those places will have been full of my people. My friends. My acquaintances.”
Late Saturday, a crowd of up to 250 people gathered for an impromptu candlelight vigil at the Place de la Republique, the site of a massive demonstration in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo killings earlier this year.

Eiffel Tower goes dark as France mourns 129 dead

Adrien Chambel, a 27-year-old law student, said the crowd was much sparser than in January. “You feel that people are petrified,” Chambel said.
Hollande, who declared three days of national mourning and raised the nation’s security to its highest level, called the carnage “an act of war that was prepared, organized, planned from abroad with internal help.”
The president said France would increase its military efforts to crush IS. He said France — which is part of a U.S.-led coalition bombing suspected IS targets in Syria and Iraq and also has troops fighting Islamic militants in Africa — “will be merciless toward the barbarians of Islamic State group.”
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility in an online statement in Arabic and French circulated by supporters. It was not immediately possible to confirm the authenticity of the claim, which bore the group’s logo and resembled previous verified statements from the group.
The statement called Paris “the capital of prostitution and obscenity” and mocked France’s air attacks on suspected ISIS targets in Syria and Iraq, saying France’s air power was “of no use to them in the streets and rotten alleys of Paris.”
Many of Paris’s top tourist attractions closed down Saturday, including the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum and the Disneyland theme park east of the capital. Some 3,000 troops were deployed to help restore order and reassure a frightened populace.
Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve announced that all public demonstrations would be banned until Thursday and local governments throughout the country would have the option to impose nightly curfews.
The attacks, on an unusually balmy November Friday evening, struck at the heart of Parisian nightlife, including at a soccer match, which draws together spectators of all social classes and backgrounds.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said the attacks had targeted the Paris of diversity, “probably because this example of living together, which is so strong in our city, is unbearable for fanatical people.”
Parisians expressed shock, disgust and defiance in equal measure. Some areas were quiet, but hundreds queued outside a hospital near the Bataclan concert hall to donate blood.
Authorities said seven attackers died, six in suicide bombings, a new terror tactic in France.

Candles are placed outside the French Embassy to form "Paris" in Berlin Saturday, a day after deadly attacks in Paris.
BERLIN—A 51-year-old man arrested in Germany last week with weapons in his car may be linked to the Paris attacks, the governor of Bavaria said Saturday.
A spokesman for Bavarian state police confirmed earlier Saturday that firearms, explosives and hand grenades were found when police stopped a man near the German-Austrian border on Nov. 5. Ludwig Waldinger declined to confirm reports by public broadcaster Bayrischer Rundfunk that the man appeared to be en route to Paris when he was arrested.
Responding to questions about the Paris attacks, Bavarian governor Horst Seehofer said: “In the course of spot checks we had an arrest where there are reasonable grounds to assume that there may be a link to the matter.”
He didn’t elaborate in his comments broadcast by Bayrischer Rundfunk.
Citing unidentified investigators, the station reported that documents found during the arrest indicated that the man was from Montenegro and was travelling to Paris. It also reported that the weapons, which it said included an automatic rifle and one kilogram of TNT, were professionally hidden inside the body of the car, a VW Golf.
Rainer Wendt, chairman of the German Police Union, said security agencies appeared to have been tipped off that the man was planning to enter Germany.
“It seems it was found that he originally wanted to go to Paris, heavily armed with several different firearms and explosives,” Wendt told German news station n-tv.
“That the French authorities were informed about this is totally clear,” he added. “From what we know the man is in custody and isn’t saying anything, so with that information alone the French authorities seem to have been unable to do much. At least the attack couldn’t be prevented, despite all the efforts that were surely made.”
